Petroleum jelly and tallow are both occlusives that seal water into the skin, and petroleum jelly does that job reliably. The difference is what else they bring: petroleum jelly is inert and sits on top, while tallow adds fatty acids close to the skin's own that the barrier can use. Neither is dangerous; the choice comes down to whether you want a pure seal or a seal that also supports the barrier.

The tallow vs petroleum jelly question comes up more than almost any other in my inbox, and it usually arrives loaded with an assumption: that one of these has to be the villain. I want to take the honesty seriously here, because petroleum jelly is one of the most studied, most effective barrier ingredients in the history of skincare, and pretending otherwise would insult your intelligence. The real difference between the two is quieter than the internet makes it out to be. It comes down to how each one relates to your skin, and where each one comes from.

Both are occlusives. Both slow the water your skin loses to the air. That shared job is why people compare them at all. What separates them is the material itself. One is a petroleum byproduct refined into an inert film. The other is a whole-food fat whose building blocks look almost identical to the oil your own skin makes. Neither of those facts makes one a miracle and the other a poison. They make each one better suited to a different way of thinking about your skin.

What petroleum jelly does genuinely well

I want to be fair before I say anything critical. Petrolatum earns its reputation. It is the benchmark occlusive that every other sealing ingredient gets measured against, and it holds that spot for good reason. Research published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology found that petrolatum does not simply sit as a passive lid on the skin. It permeates into the upper layers of the stratum corneum and accelerates barrier recovery in skin that has been stripped or damaged. That is a strong result, and it is why dermatologists reach for it on cracked hands and post-procedure skin.

The mechanism is straightforward. Occlusives reduce transepidermal water loss, the slow evaporation of moisture through the outer skin. By forming a film across the surface, petrolatum traps the water already in the skin and lets the barrier rebuild underneath. Study after study confirms the reduction in water loss and the improvement in barrier function. If your only goal is to seal water in as efficiently as possible, petrolatum is genuinely hard to beat, and I am not going to tell you it does not work.

Why petrolatum became the benchmark

Part of what makes petrolatum so useful is how little it does beyond sealing. It is chemically stable, it does not go rancid, it has an almost nonexistent allergy rate, and it costs very little to produce. Those traits are why it shows up in ointments, lip balms, and hospital wound care. When a material is inert, predictable, and cheap, it becomes the default. I respect that. A lot of skincare marketing wants you to believe the most expensive or most complicated ingredient is the best one, and petrolatum is a standing argument against that idea. It is simple, and simple works. My disagreement with it is not about whether it seals. It is about what sealing alone leaves out, and about where the material comes from, which are two separate points worth keeping straight.

Where the honest distinction lives

Here is the part the comparison usually skips. Petrolatum works by sitting on top of your skin. It is inert by design, chemically inactive, which is exactly why it is so stable and so effective as a barrier. It does not interact with your skin's own lipids because it has nothing in common with them. It is a film. A very good film, but a film.

Tallow relates to your skin differently because it is built from the same fats your skin is. Its fatty acid profile is close to human sebum. Tallow carries palmitic, stearic, and oleic acids in proportions that mirror the oils your own skin produces, and human sebum is built largely from those same three fatty acids. The skin does not read tallow as a foreign film sitting on top of it, because biochemically it is not foreign. It integrates into the barrier rather than only capping it. A 2024 scoping review in Cureus looked at the evidence on tallow and concluded it is broadly biocompatible with healthy skin and may offer hydration and mild soothing benefits, while being honest that the human clinical trial data is thin. I will hold the same line. There is no head-to-head trial proving tallow outperforms petrolatum at raw water sealing, and I am not going to invent one. Petrolatum likely still wins on pure occlusive power measured in a lab. What tallow offers is a different proposition: lipids your barrier recognizes and can use, delivered by a material that behaves like skin instead of like a wrapper.

Petroleum-derived versus whole-food source

The second honest distinction is about origin, and this is where my own convictions come in. Petrolatum is a byproduct of crude oil refining. Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is highly purified and regulated, and I am not going to fearmonger about it, because the refined product used in skincare is well controlled. But the source is what it is. It is a petroleum derivative, engineered into an inert substance precisely so it will not react with anything.

Tallow comes from an animal. The regeneratively raised tallow we work with is rendered from a single whole-food source, the fat of ruminant animals, the same material human skin has been fed and repaired with for most of human history. That difference matters if you believe, as I do, that the body tends to recognize whole materials it evolved alongside more readily than materials engineered to be inert. It has no active relationship with the skin underneath, so it tends to sit until you wipe it off. That is fine for a cracked heel under a sock overnight. It is less pleasant on a face you want to look and feel normal in an hour.

Tallow softens into the skin because the barrier accepts its lipids as compatible material. It works as an emollient that smooths texture, and it brings the sealing benefit of an occlusive without the plasticky top layer. For dry, reactive, or barrier-compromised skin, that integration tends to feel like relief rather than coating. Because petroleum jelly does nothing but seal, it works best layered over skin that already has water in it, which is why the standard advice is to apply it to damp skin. On its own, over dry skin, it can lock in a dry state as easily as a hydrated one. Tallow carries its own lipids into the equation, so it is contributing material to the barrier rather than only trapping what is already there.
