Tallow is rendered beef fat. The reason it works in skincare is its fatty acid profile, which is remarkably close to human sebum, the oil your skin already produces. Your skin recognizes it and absorbs it without the immune response most synthetic and even some natural ingredients trigger. We use tallow from regeneratively raised cattle, which sits a tier above grass-fed and organic for soil health and animal welfare.
Most tallow skincare is built on three or four ingredients: tallow, a carrier oil, and an essential oil for scent. We treat tallow as the base, not the entire formula, and build around what tallow alone doesn't deliver. The Hydration Trinity of castor, meadowfoam, and squalane complements tallow's fatty acid profile. Rosehip and sea buckthorn add vitamin A and omega-7. Whole botanical infusions of rose, vanilla pods, and marshmallow root replace essential oils entirely. It's a complete formula, not a simple one. That's why we're the first tallow brand carried in integrative medical clinics.
We don't describe ourselves that way. What we can tell you is that we source regeneratively raised suet-based tallow (a tier above grass-fed), use 12 bioactive ingredients instead of the industry-standard three or four, formulate without essential oils or synthetic preservatives, and are the only tallow brand carried in integrative physician offices. Whether that meets your definition of premium is a fair question to answer for yourself by reading the ingredient list.
Those brands are excellent and we respect what they've built. The difference is the base ingredient. They use water-based or serum-style formulas with active botanical extracts. We use regeneratively raised tallow as the foundation, which provides a lipid base your skin recognizes as its own sebum. No emulsifiers, no water, no synthetic preservatives. Our formula delivers barrier-building fat per application rather than water-diluted actives. Different approaches, different skin responses. We built for the buyer who wants the ancestral ingredient done at the highest modern standard.
Primally Pure is the largest tallow brand in the category. The two main differences: most Primally Pure products contain essential oils, which disqualify them for pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, and reactive skin. Our entire line is essential oil free. We also build with a more complete lipid stack (the Hydration Trinity plus rosehip and sea buckthorn), where Primally Pure typically uses fewer ingredients. We built True Origin for the buyer who reads ingredient labels and has reacted to clean products before.
Holistic and functional medicine practitioners screen products against stricter criteria than retail buyers apply. Essential oils in leave-on products, synthetic preservatives, and opaque sourcing are typical disqualifiers. We formulated without any of those from the beginning. Carriage in integrative clinics is the trust signal that matters most to us because it reflects the standard we built to, not a marketing decision we made after the fact.
Yes. Every True Origin product contains zero essential oils. We scent through slow infusion of whole botanicals (rose petals, vanilla pods, marshmallow root) directly into the lipid base. This makes us one of the few tallow brands appropriate for pregnancy, postpartum, breastfeeding, and reactive skin. The full explanation is in our post on essential oils and skin.
Suet is the fat surrounding the kidneys and organs of the animal. Most tallow brands use trim fat from other parts of the carcass. Suet produces a purer, odorless tallow with a more neutral base for skincare formulation. Because suet-based tallow has virtually no scent, we don't need essential oils to mask it. That's one of the structural reasons our formula can be essential oil free while most competitors' formulas can't.
Skincare products that contain water need synthetic preservatives to prevent bacterial growth. We formulated without water, so we don't need preservatives. Every application delivers pure lipid. That also means better shelf stability and a formula that performs from day one to the last application in the jar.
Same base ingredient, different texture. Tallow balm is solid at room temperature, like butter just out of the fridge. Whipped tallow has been aerated to a soft mousse-like texture that spreads easily and absorbs faster. We whip because it's easier to apply on the face, absorbs without leaving a heavy film, and the lighter texture means you use less per application.
Twelve bioactive ingredients sourced to a standard most skincare brands don't apply. Regeneratively raised suet-based tallow instead of commodity trim fat. A full Hydration Trinity of castor, meadowfoam, and squalane. Cold-pressed rosehip and sea buckthorn. Whole botanical infusions rather than essential oil drops. No fillers, no water, no synthetic preservatives. A 4oz jar lasts most face-only users three to four months, which works out to roughly $0.65 per day. The cost-per-use comparison to a $30 moisturizer you go through in six weeks is closer than it looks. Full ingredient list on the product page.
Each jar is handcrafted in small batches in Saratoga Springs, Utah.
Use a pea-sized amount on damp skin after cleansing or bathing. Press gently into your face, neck, or body. Damp skin helps the lipid spread and absorb. If it sits on the surface instead of absorbing, you used too much.
Pea-sized for the face. A little more for hands, elbows, knees, or dry patches. One 4oz jar typically lasts a face-only user three to four months.
Face: apply to damp skin after cleansing, press in gently, give it 60 seconds to absorb before applying sunscreen or makeup. Body: use after a shower while skin is still damp. The same product works for both.
Yes. No essential oils or actives in the formula, so the eye area is fine. Use a small amount and pat rather than rub.
Yes. Let it absorb for about a minute before applying anything over it. If it pills under makeup, you used too much.
Yes. Tallow doesn't interfere with most active ingredients. Standard layering: water-based serum first (vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid), then your active (retinol, tretinoin), then Deep Hydration Whip as the final occlusive layer to seal everything in. If you're using a prescription retinoid, confirm with your dermatologist.
Yes. Hands, chest, heels, elbows, anywhere dry. The formula works head to toe.
For most users, no. Deep Hydration Whip replaces face moisturizer, body moisturizer, hand cream, and lip balm. Add sunscreen separately.
The formula contains no essential oils, no retinoids, no synthetic preservatives, and no ingredients on standard pregnancy avoidance lists. Customers have used it through all three trimesters. The full reasoning is in our post on tallow skincare during pregnancy. Confirm with your OB or midwife if you have specific conditions.
Yes. No essential oils and no compounds known to affect milk supply or transfer to nursing infants. Wash off visible residue from hands or chest before direct nursing as a general precaution. More detail in our post on tallow for postpartum.
The founder created True Origin after a severe autoimmune skin condition that didn't respond to anything else. The full story is on the about page. The formula was built for reactive skin: no essential oils, no fragrance, no synthetic preservatives, no actives, just barrier-similar lipids your skin recognizes. Always patch test if your skin reacts to most products.
Yes. Many customers use it on their own skin and on their babies for cradle cap, dry patches, and general moisture. No essential oils, no fragrance, no synthetic ingredients. Patch test first. More detail in our post on tallow for babies and kids.
If you have a history of reacting to clean products, yes. Apply a small amount to the inside of your forearm and wait 24 hours before applying to your face.
We don't use synthetic stabilizers, so each batch reflects natural variation in the tallow and botanicals. Performance is consistent. The exact look may shift slightly.
The product is unaffected. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and rewhip gently with a clean utensil to restore the texture.
Temperature swings cause the fatty acids to crystallize. Warm a small amount in your palms and the texture smooths out. To fix the whole jar, refrigerate briefly and rewhip.
Yes. They're from the botanical infusions (rose petals, vanilla pods, marshmallow root) and don't affect performance.
Sealed, away from direct sunlight and heat. Don't leave it in a hot car. The bathroom counter is fine.
No. Refrigerate only to restore texture after it softens.
12 months unopened. Use within 6 months once opened.
Yes. Regenerative farming is a tier above grass-fed and organic. It means the cattle are raised in a way that actively improves soil health and biodiversity rather than just minimizing harm.
Castor oil, meadowfoam seed oil, and squalane. These three lipids complement tallow's fatty acid profile by covering what tallow alone doesn't supply. Castor draws moisture into the skin. Meadowfoam prevents transepidermal water loss and stabilizes the formula. Squalane, derived from olives, absorbs quickly and supports barrier recovery without greasiness.
Tallow alone doesn't supply everything skin needs. Rosehip adds vitamin A in its natural carotenoid form (trans-retinoic acid), which supports skin renewal without the pregnancy concerns of synthetic retinoids. Sea buckthorn adds omega-7 and carotenoids that tallow doesn't contain in meaningful amounts. Both are cold-pressed and organic where supply permits.
Essential oils are the volatile aromatic fraction of a plant, concentrated to hundreds of times its natural occurrence. That concentration creates phototoxicity, sensitization, and oxidation problems. Whole botanical infusions use the entire plant at its natural concentration, bound to stable fats. The scent is gentler because the plant itself is gentler. And unlike essential oils, the infused aromatics don't oxidize into allergens over the life of the jar.
We source organic and regenerative where available. Botanicals (rose petals, vanilla pods, marshmallow root) are organic where supply permits.
No. The formula contains no water, so it doesn't need preservatives to prevent bacterial growth. Vitamin E and rosemary CO2 extract protect the oils from oxidation.
Essential oils, synthetic fragrance, synthetic preservatives, retinoids, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, mineral oil, petroleum derivatives, honey (prone to mold due to water content), and cheap filler oils like olive and avocado that some tallow brands use to lower cost.
Yes. We never test on animals.
Yes to both, though our facility isn't formally certified for either. Check the ingredient list if you have severe allergies.
Within 1 to 2 business days. We refrigerate each jar overnight before shipping to firm up the texture.
Performance is unaffected. Refrigerate for 30 minutes and rewhip gently to restore the texture.
