Tallow vs Squalane: Why We Use Both

Squalane and tallow are not competitors, and comparing them as alternatives misses what each is for. Squalene is a lipid your skin already produces in quantity, making up roughly 10 to 20% of sebum. Squalane is the hydrogenated, shelf-stable version of it, and it is light, fast-absorbing, and finishes dry. Tallow is a heavier occlusive whose fatty acids resemble the skin's own triglycerides. One spreads and sinks, the other seals. We use both in the same formula for exactly that reason.

What is squalane, and why the spelling change?

Squalene, with an e, is the naturally occurring compound. It appears in human sebum at roughly 10 to 20% by weight, which is unusually high compared with other body lipid compartments, according to this analysis of the stratum corneum lipidome in Scientific Reports. Your skin makes it deliberately.

We use both for that reason. Our own formula pairs tallow with squalane rather than treating them as alternatives.

The problem is that squalene oxidizes readily. Oxidized squalene is associated with irritation and is one of the compounds implicated in comedogenesis, so putting raw squalene in a jar and leaving it on a shelf is a poor idea.

Squalane, with an a, is squalene with the double bonds hydrogenated out. That single change makes it stable for years while keeping the light feel. Most cosmetic squalane is now derived from sugarcane or olives rather than the shark liver oil that was historically used.

How do they behave differently on skin?

Squalane is a light emollient. It has low viscosity, spreads easily, absorbs quickly, and leaves a dry finish. It fills in between surface cells and improves smoothness without a heavy feel. What it does not do well is form a durable seal, because it is too light to hold much back.

Tallow is the opposite trade. Its fatty acid profile runs roughly 37 to 43% oleic, 24 to 32% palmitic, and 20 to 25% stearic acid, and those saturated fractions make it solid at room temperature and effective at slowing water loss. What it does not do is disappear instantly, which is where the greasy complaint comes from when people use too much.

Why put both in one formula?

Because they solve each other's weaknesses.

Squalane thins the balm and makes it spread further, which means you use less and it feels lighter going on. That is not a cosmetic detail, since using too much is the single most common reason people abandon tallow. Tallow supplies the occlusion squalane lacks.

This is the point where our formulation argument shows up again. A jar that is 80 to 90% tallow, which is the category norm, has very little room for a meaningful amount of squalane or anything else. The remaining fraction gets split between a carrier oil, sometimes a fragrance, and whatever is on the front of the label, so those ingredients end up present at trace levels. Which should you choose if you only pick one?

Depends on your skin and the season.

Squalane alone suits oilier skin, humid weather, and anyone who dislikes any weight on their face. It is a reasonable single-ingredient product and it is inexpensive.

Tallow alone suits dry, tight, or barrier-compromised skin, cold weather, and anyone whose skin loses water quickly. If your skin feels tight a few hours after moisturizing, occlusion is what you were missing.

If your skin is reactive, the more useful question is what else is in the bottle. Both ingredients are well tolerated. Fragrance is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, and that is more likely to be your problem than either lipid.
