Seborrheic dermatitis sits at the intersection of a disrupted barrier and an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast, which is why results with any oil-based product vary from person to person. A clean, fragrance-free tallow balm can support the barrier for some people, though richer oils do not suit everyone with this condition. Seborrheic dermatitis is one of the more confusing skin conditions to research, because the science points in two directions at once. One line of research shows a damaged skin barrier, with altered ceramide levels and higher water loss in affected skin. Another line shows an overgrowth of a yeast called Malassezia, which feeds on certain fatty acids in sebum and leaves behind byproducts that irritate skin. Both are true. A newer study using tape-strip sampling on facial lesions found the same pattern from a different angle. Researchers identified downregulation of specific barrier genes and proteins, including markers called CLDN1, CLDN8, FA2H, and ELOVL3, in seborrheic dermatitis skin, alongside signs of immune activation. A related study found that people with facial seborrheic dermatitis also had higher Staphylococcus epidermidis colonization and impaired permeability barrier function, reinforcing that the skin's outer defense is doing a worse job holding water in and keeping irritants out. None of this says a damaged barrier is the only cause. It says barrier repair is one legitimate, evidence-supported piece of managing the condition, alongside whatever a dermatologist prescribes for the yeast side.

Transepidermal water loss, the measurement used across several of these studies, is a useful way to think about what's happening. Healthy skin holds onto water because a lattice of ceramides and other lipids sits between skin cells and blocks moisture from escaping. When that lattice is disrupted, whether by genetics, environment, or the inflammatory process seborrheic dermatitis itself triggers, water escapes faster and the skin's ability to keep irritants out weakens at the same time.
