Tallow and Fungal Acne: When Tallow Is the Wrong Choice
If you have fungal acne, tallow is probably the wrong moisturizer for you. Fungal acne is an overgrowth of Malassezia yeast in the hair follicles, and Malassezia cannot make its own fat, so it feeds on the fatty acids it finds on your skin. Its favorites are palmitic acid and oleic acid, which together make up most of beef tallow. Tallow will not cause fungal acne, but it can feed an overgrowth you already have, and the honest advice from a tallow brand is to treat the yeast first and revisit tallow later, if at all.
I sell tallow, so it costs me something to write this piece, and that is the reason to trust it. Most of what you will read about tallow and fungal acne comes from one of two places: tallow brands insisting their jar is different, or fungal-acne forums treating every oil as poison. Neither is much use to someone with itchy, uniform bumps across the forehead and chest who is trying to figure out why their moisturizer keeps making it worse. The biology is clear enough to give a straight answer, and the straight answer is that this is one of the conditions where tallow does not belong.
That includes ours. Our Deep Hydration Whip is built on regeneratively raised tallow, and a formula built on tallow is a formula built on the fatty acids this yeast eats. I would rather say that plainly than sell a jar to someone it will not help.
What is fungal acne, and why does it matter which fat you use?
Fungal acne is not acne. The medical name is Malassezia folliculitis, sometimes written pityrosporum folliculitis, and it is an overgrowth of a yeast that lives on nearly everyone's skin. Under normal conditions Malassezia is part of the resident skin flora and causes no trouble. When conditions tip in its favor, heat, sweat, occlusion, a course of antibiotics that clears out the bacteria it competes with, it multiplies inside the hair follicles and produces small, uniform, often itchy bumps. They cluster on the forehead, hairline, chest and back, and they do not respond to the usual acne treatments because the usual acne treatments target bacteria.
Here is the part that matters for anyone choosing a moisturizer. Malassezia is lipid-dependent. A 2019 paper in the Journal of Fungi confirmed that all 18 known Malassezia species lack the genes to make their own fatty acids and must take long-chain fatty acids from outside the cell to grow at all (Tenagy et al., 2019). On your skin, that means the yeast eats the fats in your sebum. From a jar, it means the yeast can eat whatever fats you apply.
Which fats specifically is the question that decides whether a product is Malassezia-safe, and it has been studied directly. A 2025 study in FEMS Yeast Research grew two Malassezia species on defined media containing single fatty acids, one at a time. Palmitic acid, a saturated 16-carbon fatty acid, produced the most efficient growth for both species. Oleic acid, the 18-carbon monounsaturated fat, supported growth about as well. Stearic acid supported limited growth in one species. Shorter chains such as lauric and myristic acid barely supported growth at all (Liebregts et al., 2025). The older rule of thumb in the fungal acne community, that chain lengths from roughly 11 to 24 carbons feed the yeast, comes from earlier culture work and is a fair summary. The newer study sharpens it: palmitic and oleic are the fats it likes best.
Why does tallow feed Malassezia?
Because tallow is mostly palmitic and oleic acid. The 2024 scoping review of tallow in Cureus lists its main fatty acids as oleic, palmitic, stearic and linoleic (Russell et al., 2024). Oleic acid on its own is roughly 40% of tallow. Palmitic runs somewhere in the mid-20s and stearic somewhere in the high teens, depending on the animal and the fat deposit. Those three fats are the two that Malassezia grows best on plus the one it grows on a little. There is not much in tallow the yeast cannot use.
That is not a defect in tallow. The same composition is the whole reason tallow works so well as a moisturizer for dry, barrier-compromised skin: it overlaps with the free fatty acids already in the outer layer of skin, so it seals well and sits comfortably. I have written about that overlap in how tallow mimics sebum, and it is a real advantage. But sebum is also what Malassezia eats, and a fat that resembles sebum resembles the yeast's food supply. The property that makes tallow good for a dry face is the property that makes it a poor idea on a face with an active yeast overgrowth.
Two caveats so I am not overstating it. First, the fatty acids in tallow are bound up as triglycerides rather than floating free, and Malassezia has to break those down with its own lipase enzymes before it can eat them. It has those enzymes, and it uses them on your sebum every day, so this is not a loophole, but the process is not instant. Second, the growth studies are in a dish. A dish is not a follicle, and nobody has run a trial putting tallow on people with Malassezia folliculitis and counting bumps. The mechanism is strong enough that I would not run that trial on myself, and I would not sell you a jar to run it either.
The formula around the tallow does not rescue it. Our own Deep Hydration Whip adds castor, meadowfoam and squalane to the base, and I would love to tell you the extras cancel the problem. They do not. Squalane is a hydrocarbon rather than a fatty acid and is generally considered Malassezia-safe on its own, and castor oil's ricinoleic acid is a less favored food for the yeast. But the base is still tallow, and the yeast does not care what else is in the jar.
How do you know if it is fungal acne rather than regular acne?
You do not, reliably, without a clinician. The two get mistaken for each other constantly, and the mistake matters because the treatments are opposite. Regular acne is bacterial and inflammatory, and it responds to benzoyl peroxide, retinoids and antibiotics. Fungal acne does not respond to any of those, and antibiotics can make it worse by clearing the competition. A dermatologist can confirm it with a skin scraping under a microscope or, more often, by trying an antifungal and watching what happens.
There are patterns that point one way or the other, and they are worth knowing before the appointment. Fungal acne tends to be uniform, dozens of bumps the same size, rather than the mix of blackheads, whiteheads and deeper cysts that regular acne produces. It itches, which regular acne mostly does not. It favors the forehead, hairline, chest, shoulders and back, and it flares with sweat, heat and tight clothing. It often shows up after a course of antibiotics or a stretch of humid weather. If that describes you, the next step is a clinician and an antifungal, not a new moisturizer.
The reason to get this right before blaming your tallow: a lot of people who think tallow "broke them out" have one of two other things going on. Some have regular acne triggered by essential oils or heavy waxes in a tallow product, which I cover in tallow for acne-prone skin. Some have a barrier that needs a couple of weeks to settle on any new occlusive, which is different from a reaction, as I explain in tallow purge or breakout. Fungal acne is a third thing, and it is the one where tallow itself, not the additives, is the problem.
What should you use instead while the yeast is active?
Treat the yeast first. That usually means a topical antifungal, and for many people the accessible version is an antifungal shampoo used as a short-contact wash on the affected skin, which a clinician can recommend along with anything stronger. Stop the fats that feed it during treatment: tallow, shea, coconut, olive, and most plant oils, since nearly all of them are built on the same long-chain fatty acids.
For moisture while you treat, the choices that do not feed Malassezia are the ones with no usable fatty acids. Squalane is the usual recommendation, a saturated hydrocarbon that the yeast cannot metabolize. Mineral oil and petrolatum are also hydrocarbons and also safe on that count. Medium-chain triglycerides such as caprylic and capric acid have been studied as growth inhibitors rather than food. A simple humectant serum with glycerin under one of those is a reasonable two-week routine while the antifungal works, and it is what I tell people who write to me with this problem.

Coconut oil deserves a note because the internet cannot agree on it. Its main fat, lauric acid, is a 12-carbon chain that the 2025 study found supports only limited growth. But coconut oil also carries palmitic and myristic acid, and some people with fungal acne report flares on it. I would put it in the "test carefully" column rather than the safe one.
Can you ever go back to tallow after fungal acne?
Some people can. Malassezia folliculitis is an overgrowth, not an infection you clear permanently, and the yeast will still be on your skin after treatment because it is on everyone's skin. Once the follicles are quiet and the trigger that tipped things over is gone, the balance that kept the yeast in check before can hold again, and a fatty moisturizer may be fine. Other people find that any long-chain fat brings the bumps back within weeks, and for them tallow stays off the list. There is no way to predict which group you are in except to try, cautiously, after the clinician has signed off.
If you do try it again, do it the way you would test any new product on skin with a history: one small area, on the jaw rather than the forehead, for a week, with nothing else new. If the uniform itchy bumps return, that is your answer, and it is a better answer than anything I can give you from here. If they do not, tallow can go back to doing the thing it does well, which is sealing moisture into skin that tolerates fat.
The same rule applies to seborrheic dermatitis, which is driven by the same yeast on the scalp and around the nose and brows. Where does that leave a tallow brand?
Saying no to some customers. Tallow gets sold as if it suited everyone, and that overselling is part of why dermatologists are skeptical of the whole category. It does not suit everyone. It suits a specific kind of skin very well, and part of being straight with you about that is naming the skin it does not suit. Fungal acne is at the top of that list. Treat the yeast, moisturize with something it cannot eat, and come back to tallow only when your skin, and your clinician, say it is time.
