Tallow vs CeraVe: An Honest Comparison of Two Different Approaches
CeraVe is a genuinely well-formulated product and we are not going to pretend otherwise. It is inexpensive, widely available, dermatologist-recommended, and built around ceramides that address a real deficiency in compromised skin. Tallow is a different approach: a lipid base whose fatty acids resemble the ones your skin already makes, with no water phase and no preservative system. Neither is a scam. They suit different skin, different budgets, and different priorities, and the useful comparison is mechanical rather than moral.
We make a tallow product at True Origin Skincare, so read this as an interested party. We have tried to write the version that would still be fair if a CeraVe formulator read it.
What is in CeraVe, and what is it doing?
Water first, then a combination of ceramides, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, petrolatum in some formulas, emulsifiers to hold the water and oil together, silicones for slip, and a preservative system because anything with a water phase will grow microbes without one.
The ceramide part is the substantive bit and it is well grounded. The skin barrier is built largely from ceramides, cholesterol, and free fatty acids, and this analysis of the stratum corneum lipidome in Scientific Reports describes the stratum corneum as running roughly 50% ceramides with free fatty acids and cholesterol making up most of the rest. Barrier-compromised skin is measurably short of those lipids. Supplying ceramides directly is a reasonable response to that.
The long ingredient list that natural brands like to mock is mostly doing necessary work. Emulsifiers exist because you cannot mix oil and water without them. The preservative exists because a water phase without one is a health risk. Those are consequences of choosing a water-based format, not evidence of carelessness.
What is tallow doing instead?
Supplying the fatty acid side of that same barrier, in a form the skin recognizes.
Tallow runs roughly 37 to 43% oleic acid, 24 to 32% palmitic, and 20 to 25% stearic. Those are lipids the skin surface already contains, which is why tallow sits comfortably rather than sitting oddly, and why it does not need an emulsifier or a preservative. There is no water in it, so there is nothing for microbes to grow in.
What tallow does not supply is ceramides. It is not a ceramide product and we would not claim it is. If your barrier is specifically short of ceramides, a ceramide product addresses that more directly. We also do not repeat the claim that tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K. Several tallow brands compare themselves to CeraVe on exactly that basis. The testing does not support it, and it is worth noticing when a comparison rests on it.

Which should you choose?
CeraVe is the better first move if you want something cheap and easy to buy, your skin is oily or combination, you need something light under sunscreen and makeup, or you have not yet worked out what your skin reacts to. Starting with the inexpensive, widely tested option is sensible and we would say so to anyone.
Tallow is the better fit if your skin is persistently dry, tight, or flaking, you react to fragrance or preservatives, you want a very short ingredient list so you can identify what bothers you, or you have used water-based moisturizers for years and still feel tight a few hours later.
That last one is the honest tell. If a lotion feels hydrating and then wears off, the problem is often that most of what you applied was water, and water evaporates. A lipid layer does not.
Is there a reason to avoid one?
For CeraVe: the preservative and fragrance components are the usual suspects for people with genuinely reactive skin. Not for everyone, and if you have never had a reaction this is not a reason to switch. It is worth knowing that fragrance is the most common cause of allergic contact dermatitis, which is why we leave it out entirely. See fragrance-free vs unscented.
For tallow: it is expensive, it will not suit everyone, and no brand can tell you in advance whether it will clog your pores. The comedogenic ratings that debate rests on come from rabbit-ear testing never validated for human facial skin, which we went through in does tallow clog pores. Can you use both?
Yes, and for a lot of people that is the right answer. A light water-based moisturizer in the morning under sunscreen, a lipid balm at night when nothing has to go over it. They are not competing for the same slot.
