Does Tallow Have SPF? What the Research Shows
Tallow does not have a meaningful SPF and should not be used in place of sunscreen. Any natural oil offers a tiny, unreliable amount of UV attenuation, far below the SPF 30 dermatologists recommend, and no moisturizer can claim an SPF without an approved UV filter and testing. Tallow supports the skin barrier, which is different from protecting it from UV. Keep using a dedicated broad-spectrum sunscreen.
A customer messaged me last month asking if she could skip her sunscreen on days she wore Deep Hydration Whip. Sun Protection Factor is not a general sense of "this product has some UV blocking quality." It is a specific, regulated, laboratory-measured number. A product earns an SPF rating by applying a standardized amount to human skin, exposing that skin to a calibrated UV light source, and measuring how much longer it takes to burn compared to unprotected skin. The test is repeated across multiple subjects, and the resulting number has to hold up under those controlled conditions before a manufacturer can print it on a label.
No part of that process happens informally. The FDA regulates sunscreen as an over-the-counter drug, not a cosmetic, which means SPF claims are drug claims. A product cannot say "SPF 15" or "provides sun protection" unless it has been formulated with an approved active UV filter and tested according to that monograph. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the two mineral filters most natural sunscreen brands rely on, and they work through a documented physical mechanism: they sit on the surface of the skin and scatter or absorb UV radiation.
Tallow has none of that testing behind it. There is no published, peer-reviewed SPF rating for tallow, rendered or otherwise. When you see a specific SPF number attached to tallow online, that number was not generated in a lab. It was estimated, guessed, or borrowed from a formula that also contained an actual mineral filter, with the tallow getting credit for work the zinc oxide did.
The Direct Answer
Does tallow have SPF
No. Tallow on its own has no meaningful, measurable, or reliable UV filtering capacity. It has never been tested and rated the way a real sunscreen active is tested and rated. Any claim that tallow "has SPF 4" or "SPF 20" or any other number is not backed by the kind of controlled human testing the FDA requires before a product can carry that number on its label.
This does not mean tallow does nothing when UV light hits skin. It means whatever it does has not been quantified into a Sun Protection Factor, and treating it as if it had been is the kind of overreach that gets natural skincare brands in trouble with regulators and, more importantly, gets customers sunburned while they think they're protected.
A moisturizer that feels protective is not the same as a moisturizer that is tested and proven protective.
I want to be specific about why this distinction matters, because it is where most of the confusion in this category comes from.
Why This Is A Legal Question, Not Just A Marketing One
Why moisturizers without an approved UV filter cannot claim sun protection
In the United States, sunscreen is regulated by the FDA as an over-the-counter drug under a specific monograph. That monograph lists the active ingredients allowed to make a sun protection claim, the concentrations they can be used at, and the testing required to support an SPF number on the label. Cosmetics, including moisturizers, body butters, and facial oils, are regulated separately and are not allowed to make drug claims. A body butter that says "provides sun protection" or attaches any SPF number to its label without an approved active ingredient and the testing to back it up is making an illegal drug claim.
This is the same regulatory logic that keeps cosmetics from claiming they treat or cure a skin condition. A moisturizer can support the skin barrier. It cannot treat eczema. A body butter can hydrate and soften skin. It cannot block UV radiation unless it contains an ingredient proven to do that and has been tested to confirm it. The bar is not "does this ingredient contain antioxidants" or "does this ingredient theoretically interact with light." The bar is controlled human testing against a regulatory standard, and tallow has not cleared that bar.
I bring this up because a lot of the "natural SPF" claims circulating online for tallow, coconut oil, red raspberry seed oil, and other natural fats come from the same source: informal estimates, sometimes decades old, that get repeated as fact without anyone checking whether they were ever tested under the standard the FDA requires. A number without a testing method behind it is not a Sun Protection Factor. It's a guess wearing a lab coat.
What a real SPF claim requires
- An approved active ingredient. Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or one of the chemical filters listed in the FDA monograph, at a tested concentration.
- Standardized human testing. Applied at a set thickness, measured against a calibrated UV source, repeated across multiple subjects.
- A documented, repeatable number. The SPF rating on the label has to match what the testing produced, not an estimate.
- Broad spectrum testing if claimed. UVA protection is measured and verified separately from UVB protection.
- Regulatory compliance. The finished product is registered and labeled according to the sunscreen drug monograph, not the cosmetic labeling rules.
Tallow, alone, meets none of these criteria. Neither does any moisturizer that simply contains antioxidants or has natural properties. The presence of a beneficial nutrient is not the same as a tested, rated sun filter.
What The Research Studies
What the research on animal fat and UV exposure shows
I looked at the published research directly rather than relying on secondhand summaries, because this is exactly the kind of topic where claims drift further from the source with every retelling.
A scoping review published in PMC, titled "Tallow, Rendered Animal Fat, and Its Biocompatibility With Skin," examined the existing literature on tallow's interaction with human skin. It confirms tallow's fatty acid profile is close to human sebum, which supports its use as a moisturizing and barrier ingredient, and notes tallow contains fat-soluble vitamins including A, D, E, and K. Separately, research on UVB exposure and the skin barrier, including a study published in PMC using electrical impedance spectroscopy to evaluate UV-related barrier damage, focuses on how UV radiation degrades the skin's protective function over time and how barrier integrity can be measured after exposure. That research is about what UV light does to the barrier, and how a healthy barrier resists that damage over time, not about any topical fat providing a measurable shield against UV radiation in the moment of exposure. Put simply: the literature supports tallow as a barrier-supportive, biocompatible moisturizing ingredient. It does not support tallow as a sun filter. Those are two different claims, and only one of them has research behind it.
What Tallow Is Good For
Barrier support, not UV defense
