Is Tallow Sustainable? The Honest Environmental Case
Is tallow sustainable? The answer depends far more on the supply chain a jar came from than on the ingredient category itself. Tallow is a byproduct of meat production, which means the fat exists whether or not anyone makes skincare from it, and that gives it a defensible advantage over petroleum-derived bases and over oils grown on dedicated tropical land such as palm. It does not give it immunity from the emissions and land-use problems of cattle farming, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
We sell tallow-based skincare, so read us as an interested party and check the sources yourself. What follows argues the case against tallow first, at full strength and with citations, then makes the byproduct case, then marks where the evidence runs out.

What is the strongest argument against tallow?
Start with the size of the sector, because it is large. FAO put livestock emissions at 4.3 Gt CO2eq in 2023, the single biggest component of global agrifood system emissions, which together reached 16.5 Gt CO2eq and accounted for 32% of total global emissions that year (Greenhouse gas emissions from agrifood systems: global, regional and country trends 2001 to 2023, FAO). Cattle are the largest share of the livestock figure. A substantial part of it is enteric methane, produced by microbial fermentation in the rumen and released by the animal as it digests forage.
Methane is a different kind of problem
Methane is short-lived in the atmosphere compared with carbon dioxide, which cuts both ways in the argument. Because it breaks down over roughly a decade, a herd held at constant size produces a fairly stable warming rather than an accumulating one, and reducing herd numbers lowers warming faster than reducing an equivalent tonnage of CO2 would. That is the pro-livestock reading. The other is that stable warming is still warming, and the sector holds that heat in the system for as long as it operates at current scale. Both readings come from the same physics.
Land and water use are the second charge
Cattle need space, and the crops grown to feed housed cattle need irrigated, fertilised farmland. The Nature Communications assessment of managed grasslands estimates the soil organic carbon stock in grasslands used for ruminants worldwide at about 78 Gt of carbon, which is one way of seeing how much of the planet's surface is committed to this (Risk to rely on soil carbon sequestration to offset global ruminant emissions, Nature Communications). On water we will not quote a footprint figure, because published estimates for beef vary by close to an order of magnitude depending on whether rainfall on pasture counts as consumption. The direction is not in dispute: beef is among the most resource-intensive foods produced at scale.
The subsidy argument, stated properly
This is the strongest critique and the one most often knocked down in a weakened form, so here it is at full strength. Rendering is a revenue stream. Hides, tallow, bone meal and offal all carry market value, and that value improves the economics of every animal slaughtered. If the byproduct market is profitable, it lowers the effective cost of producing a carcass, which lets producers sell beef at a lower price, which means more beef is sold. On that reading, buying tallow is a small vote in favour of more cattle rather than fewer, and calling it waste recovery obscures the incentive it creates. Co-product revenue effects are well established in agricultural economics, and the logic holds regardless of how emissions are allocated on paper.
What we cannot tell you is the magnitude. We have not found a published estimate that isolates cosmetic-grade tallow demand from the vastly larger industrial markets for rendered fat, which run to biodiesel, soap, feed and lubricants. If the effect is proportional to volume, skincare is a rounding error inside the rendering market. That is an argument about scale, and it is not the same as a rebuttal.
The position that no animal-derived ingredient can be sustainable
Some people hold that an animal ingredient cannot qualify as sustainable under any accounting, because an animal was killed for it and because a food system with fewer cattle in it would emit less whatever we do with the parts. Half of that is an ethical commitment, which no life-cycle model can settle. The other half is empirical and defensible: at the global level, lower ruminant numbers mean lower emissions, and byproduct arguments operate inside a system whose overall footprint is set by how much meat is eaten. We do not think that position can be argued away with a comparison table. If that is where you stand, plant-based formulas are the consistent choice.
Why is tallow called a byproduct, and does the label hold up?
Tallow is rendered from suet, the firm fat around the kidneys and loins of cattle raised for meat. Nobody raises cattle for suet. In life-cycle accounting this matters, because the emissions of raising the animal are assigned to the product that motivated raising it. The US biodiesel life-cycle assessment states the convention plainly: tallow is a byproduct recovered from meat production processes and therefore does not share upstream emissions such as livestock cultivation (Life Cycle Greenhouse Gas Emissions of Biodiesel and Renewable Diesel Production in the United States, Environmental Science and Technology). Only rendering and downstream processing are counted.
Be honest about what that is, though. Allocation is a modelling choice, and the standard alternatives include mass, market-value and energy allocation, each producing a different answer for the same physical system. Byproduct status is a defensible accounting position used across the peer-reviewed literature, and it is not a law of nature. What it does establish is the material fact underneath: the fat has already been produced, and the realistic alternatives to using it are rendering it for industrial fuel or paying to dispose of it. That is the same reasoning behind nose-to-tail skincare and the case for whole-animal sourcing, and it is the part of the argument we think survives scrutiny.
How does tallow compare with petroleum and palm-derived bases?

The table holds a detail worth sitting with. Petrolatum and mineral oil are themselves byproducts, recovered from the heavier fractions of crude oil refining, which means the byproduct argument cuts in their favour too. If you accept byproduct logic for tallow, consistency asks you to accept it for petrolatum, and the honest difference between them narrows to renewability and to what happens at the end of life.
Palm sits differently. Oil palm is planted for its oil, on land cleared for the purpose, in the regions where remaining lowland tropical forest is. Modelling published in iScience projected oil palm area expanding by roughly 42% between 2014 and 2030 under a business-as-usual scenario, with full implementation of zero-deforestation commitments cutting the 2030 planted area by about 11 million hectares (Projecting global oil palm expansion under zero-deforestation commitments, iScience). The complication is that oil palm yields more oil per hectare than any other major oil crop, so swapping palm for sunflower, rapeseed or coconut increases the land needed for the same volume of oil. Boycotting palm is not an automatic environmental win, which is why certified supply chains exist.
Does regenerative grazing settle the question?
No, and this is where we part company with the confident version of the tallow story. The claim that well-managed grazing sequesters enough soil carbon to cancel out cattle emissions does not hold at scale. The Nature Communications analysis calculated that offsetting the continuous methane and nitrous oxide emissions of the global ruminant sector over 100 years would need about 135 Gt of carbon sequestered, against a current managed-grassland stock of roughly 78 Gt. Reaching it would mean almost tripling existing soil carbon in those grasslands, with some regions requiring increases of up to 2,000%, and the authors describe relying on this alone as not feasible.
So regenerative grazing is a better version of cattle farming rather than a carbon-neutral one. What the practice can plausibly deliver is narrower and still worth having: continuous ground cover, better water infiltration, more soil biology, more species in the sward, and no dependence on feedlot grain. Those are local outcomes measured on the farm, and they are why we care where suet comes from. What does formulation have to do with sourcing?
Ingredient share is a sourcing decision as much as a texture decision. A formula built at the 80% to 90% tallow level typical of the category needs several times more rendered fat per jar than a formula that uses tallow as one component among several. So is tallow sustainable, in the end?
Here is where we land. Tallow has a stronger structural position than a dedicated tropical crop, because no hectare is planted for it. It has a stronger position than a fossil feedstock, because the material is renewable on a yearly cycle. It carries an unresolved liability that plant and mineral bases do not, which is its dependence on an industry with a large climate footprint and its contribution, however small, to that industry's revenue. Those three statements are all true at once, and a jar cannot be described as sustainable or unsustainable without knowing which farms are behind it.
Three questions get you most of the way to an answer about any specific product. Where were the animals raised, and under what grazing system? Was the fat sourced as suet from identified farms or bought as commodity rendered fat with no traceability? And how much tallow is in the jar, since volume determines the actual draw on the supply chain? A brand that can answer all three is making a claim you can check. A brand that answers with the word sustainable and no supply-chain detail is making a claim you cannot.

Is tallow more sustainable than palm oil?
On land use, tallow has the stronger position, because no land is planted for it while oil palm is grown on dedicated plantation land in tropical forest regions. Does buying tallow skincare increase beef production?
Byproduct revenue does improve the economics of raising cattle, so the mechanism is real. What is unclear is the magnitude, because cosmetic-grade tallow is a small fraction of a rendering market dominated by biodiesel, soap, animal feed and industrial uses. We have not found a published estimate isolating skincare demand, and we will not fabricate one. The honest answer is that the effect exists and is likely small, without a figure to attach to it.
Is regeneratively raised tallow better for the environment?
It is plausibly better on local ecological measures such as ground cover, water infiltration, soil biology and pasture species diversity, and it avoids feedlot grain inputs. It does not make the fat carbon-neutral. Peer-reviewed work in Nature Communications found that soil carbon sequestration in grasslands cannot offset global ruminant methane and nitrous oxide emissions, which would require nearly triple the current managed-grassland carbon stock. Regenerative sourcing is a genuine improvement rather than a cancellation.
What should you ask a brand about its tallow sourcing?
Ask where the cattle were raised and under what grazing system, whether the brand sources identified suet or commodity rendered fat, and what share of the formula is tallow. Those three answers tell you more than any certification logo, because they are specific enough to be wrong. A brand that will not answer the traceability question is a brand whose sustainability claim you have no way to evaluate.
