What Did People Use Before Petroleum Jelly? A History of Natural Moisturizers

Before petroleum jelly reached shops in the 1870s, people moisturized with olive oil, animal fats including tallow and lanolin, beeswax, plant butters such as shea, and preparations built on milk and honey. The history of natural moisturizers runs for thousands of years on oils, fats, and waxes, and for roughly 150 years on petroleum derivatives. The older materials did not fall out of use because they failed. They were displaced by a cheap byproduct of the oil boom.

That displacement happened inside two generations. A shopper in 1850 reached for a pot of fat, wax, or oil, most of it produced within a day of travel from where it was sold. A shopper in 1950 reached for a jar of refined petrolatum shipped from a refinery. The materials changed, the supply chain changed, and the assumptions about what skin needs changed along with them.

What did people use to moisturize before petroleum jelly?

Five categories cover most of recorded practice.

  • Plant oils. Olive across the Mediterranean, sesame in South Asia and the Near East, castor and moringa in Egypt, almond and jojoba where they grew.
  • Animal fats. Rendered beef and sheep fat (tallow), pork fat, goose and bear fat in colder regions, and lanolin recovered from sheep wool.
  • Waxes. Beeswax above all, used to give oils body and to keep them sitting on the skin instead of soaking straight in.
  • Plant butters. Shea across the West African savanna, cocoa butter in Mesoamerica, mango and kokum butters in South Asia.
  • Milk, honey, and starches. Used alone or folded into fats, valued for texture and for how they behaved on damp skin.

None of this was exotic. It was whatever the local food system already produced in surplus. Skincare sat downstream of agriculture, and it stayed there until industrial chemistry offered an alternative.

Why did olive oil dominate ancient Mediterranean skin care?

Olive oil was the default emollient of Greece and Rome because it was everywhere: a staple food, a lamp fuel, a trade good, and a store of value. Bathers oiled themselves, scraped the mixture of oil, sweat, and dust off with a curved metal strigil, then oiled again afterwards. Athletes did the same before competing. Physicians used oil as the carrier for medicinal preparations, which is how the oil-and-wax combinations that became creams entered the written record in the first place.

Olive oil on its own has a limitation you can still feel today. It absorbs, it spreads thin, and it leaves relatively little film behind. It softens well and it does not hold for long. The fix was to thicken it, and the thickener was wax.

How did beeswax turn oils into the first cream?

The oldest cream formula still recognizable today is credited to Galen, the Greek physician who worked in Rome in the second century. His preparation combined beeswax, olive oil, water, and rose petals. As the water left the skin it produced a cooling sensation, which is why the whole family of preparations descended from it came to be called cold cream. Later medical writers referred to the formula by his name, and the eponym ceratum Galeni was still turning up in published texts more than a thousand years afterwards (Ceratum Galeni: An old eponym honoring Galen and his cold cream, Clinics in Dermatology).

Two things about that formula are worth sitting with. It is a water-in-oil emulsion, the same basic architecture as most rich creams on shelves now. And it worked with four ingredients and no preservative system, because it was made in small quantities and used up quickly. Shelf life, rather than performance, is the problem industrial cosmetics solved.

What did animal fats do that plant oils could not?

Animal fats are more saturated than most plant oils, so they are solid at room temperature and they leave a heavier film on skin. That made them the winter material and the working material, used by shepherds, sailors, farmers, and anyone exposed to wind and cold for hours at a time. Tallow rendered from beef or sheep suet was the most widely available fat across Europe and later North America, because every animal butchered for meat produced fat that had to go somewhere.

Lanolin took a different route into the medicine chest. It is the waxy secretion that coats sheep wool, recovered from the water used to wash raw fleece. Greek and Roman physicians already knew it under the name oesypum, and it is still in use as an emollient in modern pharmacy, most visibly in nipple balms and lip products (Lanolin, Encyclopaedia Britannica). Its appeal then and now is the same: it holds water and it stays where you put it.

What did plant butters offer outside the Mediterranean?

Shea butter, pressed from the kernels of Vitellaria paradoxa, has been produced across the West African savanna belt for centuries, and archaeological work in Burkina Faso has pushed the evidence for shea processing back considerably further than the written record does (The Archaeology of Shea Butter (Vitellaria paradoxa) in Burkina Faso, West Africa, Journal of Ethnobiology). It served as cooking fat, as a base for medicinal preparations, as a dressing for leather, and in many communities as the first thing applied to a newborn's skin.

Cocoa butter filled a comparable role in Mesoamerica, mango and kokum butters in South Asia. The pattern repeats everywhere you look. Wherever a local crop yielded a solid fat, that fat became the moisturizer. Nobody was choosing shea over tallow on ingredient philosophy. They were using what the land in front of them produced.

Were milk and honey preparations more than legend?

Milk baths and honey masks are the part of this history most often retold and least often examined. Both materials do something measurable on skin. Honey is hygroscopic, meaning it draws water and holds onto it, and it has a long documented record of use on wounds. Milk carries fat, protein, and lactic acid, the same mild exfoliant now sold in bottles as an alpha hydroxy acid.

What the ancient sources rarely support is the celebrity anecdote attached to them. The Cleopatra milk bath story, for one, traces to much later retellings rather than to contemporary record. The materials are real and the practices existed. The glamour was retrofitted centuries afterwards.

The same caution applies to a lot of what circulates as ancient skincare wisdom. Fats, waxes, oils, honey, and milk show up repeatedly in medical and household writing across cultures, which is solid ground. The specific dates, dynasties, and named users bolted onto them often are not. When we cannot verify a claim, we leave it out.

What happened in 1859 when petroleum entered the picture?

In 1859 a chemist named Robert Chesebrough traveled to the new oil fields at Titusville, Pennsylvania. Drillers there dealt with a waxy residue that gummed up their equipment, which they called rod wax, and they rubbed it on cuts and burns. Chesebrough took samples back to Brooklyn, worked out how to filter and refine the residue, and patented the process in 1872 under a name assembled from the German word for water and the Greek word for oil: Vaseline (Vaseline, Smithsonian Institution National Museum of American History).

Petrolatum answered commercial problems the older materials had never solved. It does not go rancid, because there is little in it for oxygen to attack. It costs almost nothing, because it is a refinery byproduct rather than a crop or a carcass. It is odorless, colorless, and identical from jar to jar and from year to year. For a manufacturer building a national brand on rail and print advertising, those properties mattered more than anything a fat could offer.

Within a few decades petrolatum and mineral oil were the backbone of the cosmetics industry, and the fats, oils, and butters that came before them were reclassified as folk practice. That reclassification was about logistics and margin. It was never the result of a head-to-head comparison on skin.

Petrolatum was not the only petroleum product to arrive. Mineral oil, paraffin wax, and later silicones came out of the same refining stream, and together they replaced the fat, wax, and oil trio that had defined moisturizers since Galen. Read a mass-market cream ingredient list from the middle of the twentieth century and you are looking at a formula that could not have existed before the oil fields, held together by emulsifiers and preservatives that were themselves new industrial chemistry.

Petrolatum wins on cost, stability, and consistency, and those are real advantages. The fats and butters bring fatty acids, fat-soluble vitamins, and minor components that a purified hydrocarbon mixture does not contain. Which set of advantages matters more depends on what you want a moisturizer to do beyond sitting on top of your skin.

Why does this history matter for what you use now?

The switch to petroleum derivatives was an economic decision that got retold as a scientific upgrade.
